Anti-communist Revolution of 1989 celebrated in Timisoara

The varnishing on Monday morning of an exhibition of documentary photography and of an art exhibition, as well as the screening of the ?Remember December 1989′ documentary film were the first from a series of events to take place until December 21 in Timisoara (western Romania), organised by the association of revolutionaries and by the local authorities, as a mean to celebrate the anti-communist Revolution of 1989.

Among the events prepared for this occasion, there will be various exhibitions, book launches, pilgrimages, debates, religious services and wreath-laying ceremonies, all in the memory of the martyrs of the Revolution, who sacrificed their life in the name of freedom, and also other thematic events.

The series of events was open on Monday with the varnishing of an exhibition at the National Opera reuniting several young artists from Timisoara, and another exhibition of documentary photography, followed by the screening of the ‘Remember December 1989′ documentary film.

Starting at 8 p.m., the revolutionaries will light candles in the Victoriei Square in the memory of the victims of the Revolution of 1989, following that after 11.45 p.m. a religious service will be held at the Martyrs’ Church.

Tuesday, December 17, was declared a day of mourning in Timisoara. Beginning at 10 p.m., there will be held a memorial service devoted to the martyrs at the Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by a wreath laying ceremony and another religious service held at the Martyrs’ Church. AGERPRES
