Basescu: Solidarity of Romanians outside borders is very important

President Traian Basescu, on attending the 11th edition of the Summer University at Izvorul Muresului (central Romania) on Monday underscored there is need for the Romanians outside the country’s borders to show solidarity and stressed Romania proved it can fund programmes aimed at recovering the Romanian spirit.

‘I exactly feel what is happening with the Romanian communities in all the countries around Romania’s borders: the Vlachs: very few declare themselves to be Romanian, which explains why schools teaching in Romanian cannot be made. /…/ Truth is that the policy aimed at assimilating the Romanians /…/ has yielded results,’ he underscored.

Basescu added: ‘The question we must all raise is how do we counter such policies aimed at assimilating the Romanians. The assimilation policy was also tolerated by the Romanian state during the communist rule. The first thing we must do is to achieve the solidarity of the Romanians outside the country’s borders. /…/ The first thing I would like to ask from you is the solidarity of the Romanians outside the country’s borders. This is not an atypical situation. I’ve found it in the United States and in other countries too. There are pretty large communities that are broken up into associations and that is why they are not being considered by the Government.’

‘If you want Romania to be efficient in supporting you, we need fairness and solidarity. Romania has proved it can fund programmes for recovering the Romanian spirit’, the head of state said. AGERPRES
