Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, John Bercow, who is on an official visit to Romania, traveled to Craiova (about 246 km south-west of Bucharest) together with British Ambassador in Bucharest Martin Harris and Chamber of Deputies Speaker Valeriu Zgonea; the three met with Dolj County Council president Ion Prioteasa, Craiova City mayor Lia Olguta Vasilescu, and Subprefect Ionel Ciobotea.
Chamber of Deputies Speaker Valeriu Zgonea said the visit to Craiova of Rt. Hon. Bercow is a historic event that demonstrates the friendship between the two countries, but also that the Romanian Parliament is becoming a credible institution. Zgonea expressed hope that British investors would be attracted by the opportunities in Romania and that the relations between the two countries will follow an ascending trend from one year to another.
“We talked agriculture, industry, and infrastructure, the Calafat-Vidin bridge, we also talked about the investment of the Dolj County Council in the Craiova Airport. (…) This fall we will inaugurate direct flights from Craiova to London’s Luton Airport. We informed him of the openness of the public authorities for the county’s investment possibilities. We have 75 hectares of land to set at the investors’ disposal, we are primarily interested in jobs,” Dolj County Council president Ion Prioteasa declared.
“This is the most important visit to Craiova in recent years, it also coincides with a period of local celebrations – the Craiova City Days – and with the City Council approving that the square of the National Theatre be named ‘The William Shakespeare Square’, because we have been organizing for years now the William Shakespeare International Theatre Festival,” said mayor Lia Olguta Vasilescu.
Speaker of the British House of Commons John Bercow said that he and Speaker Zgonea also exchanged views on parliamentary functioning and the unfolding of parliamentary actions.
British Ambassador in Bucharest Martin Harris said that the visit to Romania by Speaker of the British House of Commons, John Bercow, is a special moment for the Embassy and the relations between Great Britain and Romania. Martin Harris said that the British contribution to Dolj County is not just a financial, but also a soul investment put into social and cultural projects.AGERPRES
